Scope: <p>This part of <std std-id="iso:std:iso:14531:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 14531</std-ref></std> specifies the physical properties and mechanical-performance requirements for crosslinked polyethylene (PE-X) pipes intended for use in the supply of gaseous fuels. In addition, it lays down dimensional requirements and specifies some general material properties (including chemical resistance) together with a classification scheme for PE-X produced in the form of pipe.</p><p>This part of <std std-id="iso:std:iso:14531:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 14531</std-ref></std>, when used in conjunction with the other parts of <std std-id="iso:std:iso:14531:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 14531</std-ref></std>, is applicable as the basis for the design, manufacture and installation of PE-X piping systems (PE-X pipes, PE-X fusion fittings and mechanical fittings) for the supply of category D and category E hydrocarbon-based fuels (see <std std-id="iso:std:iso:13623:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 13623</std-ref></std>) at</p><list list-type="alpha-lower"><list-item><label>a)</label><p>maximum operating pressures (MOPs) up to and including 16 bar<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn_1"><sup>1)</sup></xref> ;</p></list-item><list-item><label>b)</label><p>a maximum operating temperature of + 60 °C;</p></list-item><list-item><label>c)</label><p>a minimum operating temperature of</p><list list-type="roman-lower"><list-item><label>i)</label><p>- 50 °C</p></list-item><list-item><label>ii)</label><p>- 35 °C</p></list-item><list-item><label>iii)</label><p>— 20 °C.</p></list-item></list></list-item></list><p>This part of <std std-id="iso:std:iso:14531:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 14531</std-ref></std> may also be used in conjunction with the restricted specification for PE heat-fusion fittings detailed in <std std-id="iso:std:iso:14531:-2:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 14531-2</std-ref></std> to support the introduction of a hybrid PE-X pipe/PE fitting system for operation within a narrower temperature range (− 20 °C to + 40 °C) with a maximum pressure as determined by <std std-id="iso:std:iso:8085:-3:en" type="undated"><std-ref>ISO 8085-3</std-ref></std>.</p><p>For installation, this standard provides for the jointing of PE-X fusion fittings and mechanical fittings to PE-X pipes within the temperature range − 5 °C to + 40 °C.</p>
